Living in New England, I am blessed with ample opportunities to shoot my favorite landscapes in all four seasons. While spring and summer are not blessed with the dramatic colors of fall foliage or the minimalist feel of winter, it is made up for with a bounty of different displays of flowers and flowering trees that start in April and continue through September. Some are out for much of the season and other come and go in a few weeks so whether these are large fields of sunflowers or a small patch of tulips, they can add depth, color and interest to your spring and summer shooting.
This blog is about knowing when to look for each type of flower and how long it lasts as well as tips on composition, lighting and best practices. It includes some of my favorite shots over the years as well as specific locations that are iconic for this bloom. Finally it covers equipment needs and some specific techniques that set your image apart from the millions of cell phone imagesthat bombard your social media scroll. While it is not exhaustive, I hope it provides you some information to improve your landscape photography.
